Baking: First Try
Posted: May 9, 2010
Today, being the only day that we'll have weather even close enough to make me want to grill, we're grilling. I figured this was my best shot at trying to make my own rolls and buns for brats and burgers.
I busted out the ingredients, and went for it all by hand, since mixers are the most expensive thing ever.
First thing I learned, was that the second I started adding flour to make the actual dough, I NEED a mixer. That shit gets hard, fast, and it makes it real hard to mix everything in while trying to stir. Way hard.
I also learned that kneading bread is kind of like washing the dishes or mowing the lawn to me. I actually enjoy doing it, I just kind of zone out, and do it. Gives me time to think.
So my first batch of dough in resting and rising, and in about 40 minutes I'm gonna roll that shit out and throw it in the oven. Here's hoping that they'll turn out good enough that I won't have to go to the store and buy rolls, that would crush me. Pictures and review to follow...stay tuned.
UPDATE!
The rolls turned out horrible, weird, and I had to buy rolls for dinner. I was talking to my moms on the phone and she had mentioned not to use too much flour, which I think I did, because they were dense as all hell. I accidentally used salted butter as well and cooked them too fast so they burned on the top and bottom. In the end I wound up cooking these weird little dense as rocks, salty dinner roll things. Bummer. I shall prevail!
d00d! You left me hangin! How did the rolls turn out! I WANT to know!
